7 Apps and websites to teach kids about money
ByI’ve been doing a series of blog articles over the past few months on teaching kids about money, how to save and budget and open a bank account. This month I’ve found some apps and websites you can use to help teach kids about money. There are plenty out there but I’ve found most of them are American based and it’s important to teach kids about cents not nickels!
1. Kids Math Games Online – features various games such as a shopping game and a lemonade stand game (some of these games feature American money but there are lots to choose from)
2. iCAN Count Money Australia is an app which is apparently “the best money learning & coin counting app for kids, ranked in Top 10 Educational Apps in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and other countries!” The cost is $2.49 but it has 6 different games and really good reviews.
3. Mathsisfun.com – you can choose your currency and there are many to choose from which could come in handy if you are travelling overseas. There are also different levels starting from simple single coin puzzles, to adding up and giving change.
4. Funbrain.com – is a simple computer game where you calculate the change given. It looks quite basic but would be a great way for kids to practice working out how much change to give.
5. Australian Notes and Coins – and Using Australian Money (Skwirk, Stage 1) are two short You Tube videos that explain Australian money in a cute animation. Very easy to understand and follow, they offer a good basic introduction to Australian money.
6. Money for Kids is another app which says “chosen as best money educational app by teachers from Australia, USA and Canada.” This app has 7 currencies loaded and lots of features including a piggy bank, currency information, memory game and shopping simulator.
7. bcu Scoot Saver Think Tank – a great LOCAL resource for kids with lots of cool information and basic banking questions and terminology easily explained. You can also visit the ‘kids’ section of the website where there are photos, fun and games, competitions and best of all, a savings planner!
And don’t forget, Coffs for Kids recommend opening a bank account with our local credit union, bcu – the Scoot’s Super Saver account is aimed at kids under 13 years old. Drop into your local branch or click here for more information.
