The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book

By

When I was a kid, part of the fun of having a birthday was getting to choose a cake from the The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book. It certainly is an institution for many Aussie families!  A big part of the lead up to the birthday excitement was pouring over my  Mum’s cookbook making the all-important decision of which cake to choose.

When I had my first child 6 years ago, my Mum gave me a copy of the book – almost like a rite of passage when becoming a Mum. Strangely  enough and much to my surprise, I seem to have a secret talent for making kids cakes and I actually enjoy doing it.

So I the week before Mason’s 6th birthday I handed over the book for him to choose a cake.

“Oh this one!” (hedgehog)

“No this one!” (pirate sword)

“Oh NO THIS ONE. I really want this one!!” (Lamington Train).

“Mason, you already had the lamington train when you turned two.”

“Oh okay, well then. This one Mum, I really, really, really want this one.” (The Shape of Number Six)

Then he got a hold of the original book – which has different cakes in it and had to get out his pencil and paper to make a list. My Mum said I used to do exactly the same thing.

He ended up having a Number Six with smarties and freckles decorating it. The cake wasn’t really up to my usual standard because I had to work the day of his birthday but he loved it – I suspect it is all about the lollies.

So here’s to the wonderful Woman’s Weekly Birthday Cake book, and many more years and many more cakes to come!

youre talking about, why get rid of your intelligence on just posting
videos to the blog when you may be giving us something enlightening to
