The Gruffalo

By

I was very excited to see The Gruffalo is coming to the Jetty Theatre as the first of five Family shows for 2011. It is playing Thursday March 17th at 11.30am and 1.30pm and is aimed for kids aged 3 years and up.

Based on the children’s book by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler, The Gruffalo is one of those must-have books for every children’s bookshelf. Its popularity speaks for itself: it has sold over 10.5 million books worldwide, has won several prizes for children’s literature, has been devloped into plays and most recently (25/1/11) the short film was nominated for an Academy award for best short film.

Silly old fox/owl/snake, doesn’t he know?
there’s no such thing as a gruffalo!

The Gruffalo tells the story of a mouse and his stroll through the woods one day and the clever and cunning way he escapes being eaten by animals he encounters by telling them about the scary monster Gruffalo. Imagine his surprise when he finds out the Gruffalo actually exists!

The Gruffalo is based on a traditional Chinese folk story about a fox and a tiger. Julia Donaldson, unable to think of rhymes for “tiger” invented a word that rhymed with “know”, hence the Gruffalo was born.

There is a fantastic website for fans of the Gruffalo – www.gruffalo.com with games and activites, a fan zone and competitions to enter.

With thanks to the Jetty Theatre, we are giving away a family pass (2 adults and 2 children) to the Gruffalo playing March 17th, valued at $60. To enter, simply visit our facebook page www.facebook.com/coffsforkids and leave a comment: what is your favourite children’s book?

A winner will be announced February 14th.

If you miss out, make sure you get tickets to the show – you and the kids will love it! Click on the Gruffalo picture to purchase tickets.
